How Mindfulness Helped Me Shed Labels and Choose Curiosity Over Rigidity

Defending and Defining

How quickly do you claim something as yours? A parking spot, a seat on the train, an identity you’ve outgrown?

This week’s card brought me back to my teenage self — the girl who wore labels like armor. Daughter. Church girl. Overachiever. I thought I knew exactly who I was. But the older I got, the more those labels started to feel like chains.

I was raised to believe certain things about gender, politics, success. To defend them fiercely. And for a while, I did. I argued. I fought. I tried to change people’s minds. But over time, I realized: some battles only drain you. Some beliefs aren’t worth defending at all.

Letting go felt terrifying at first. I thought shedding old belief systems meant losing myself. But it didn’t. It was like molting — releasing old skin to reveal something more curious, more open, more beautiful underneath.

Now, I defend less. I listen more. I’ve learned that identity is fluid, and clinging too tightly only creates stress. That doesn’t mean I don’t stand firm on what matters — I do. But I’m choosier with my energy.

So here’s the question this card left me with: what beliefs or labels are you clinging to that no longer serve you? What could you shed to become more free?

Next week’s card is Endless Desire. A riskier topic — one I’m both nervous and excited to explore.

My first trip to DC. I chose this photo for its reflection—a reminder that mindfulness helps me see both what’s visible and what lies beneath.
